ROYAL FREE HOSPITAL SUBSTATION CSB HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER REPLACEMENT

London

Playfords was appointed to deliver the replacement of a critical high-voltage transformer and associated electrical infrastructure within Substation CSB at the Royal Free Hospital.

The project formed part of the Trust’s investment in improving the capacity, reliability and resilience of its electrical distribution network while maintaining continuity of
essential hospital services.

Delivered within a live healthcare environment, the works involved replacing the existing HV transformer, installing a new LV switchboard, associated power and control
cabling, structural modifications, BMS integration and monitoring upgrades. Careful planning, phased delivery and close coordination with the Trust’s Authorised Persons ensured electrical resilience was maintained throughout the programme, with no unauthorised switching activities and minimal disruption to hospital operations.

Working collaboratively with specialist manufacturers, commissioning engineers and controls contractors, all new assets were integrated into the hospital’s existing infrastructure in accordance with NHS requirements, British Standards and industry best practice. Extensive risk management, factory acceptance testing, installation inspections, site testing and witnessed commissioning ensured the highest standards of safety, quality and performance. Comprehensive O&M manuals, as-fitted drawings and staff training were provided to
support long-term operation and maintenance.

The successful project demonstrates Playfords expertise in delivering complex electrical infrastructure upgrades within live healthcare environments, providing the Royal Free Hospital with a modern, reliable and future-ready power distribution system.
