Playfords was appointed as Principal Contractor to replace the main low voltage (LV) electrical infrastructure and transformers serving Frimley Park Hospital as part of the Trust’s programme to modernise its electrical network and improve long-term resilience.
Delivered within a fully operational acute healthcare environment, the project involved replacing ageing electrical infrastructure while maintaining uninterrupted power supplies to critical facilities including wards, operating theatres, intensive care units, laboratories and essential plant systems.
The works included the installation of a new 3200A main LV switchboard, three new 2MVA transformers, a standby generator panel, upgraded HV and LV cabling, CHP integration, and construction of a new transformer compound. Live electrical services were migrated to the new infrastructure through a carefully planned nine-phase programme, with major switchovers undertaken outside normal working hours and supported by temporary supplies and standby generation.
Extensive planning, stakeholder coordination, risk assessments and testing were undertaken throughout the project to ensure operational continuity and compliance with NHS requirements, BS 7671 and relevant industry standards.
