In August 2016 Playfords successfully completed and handed over a defect free comprehensive M&E solution package working as a supply chain partner to Carillion Building Services.

Playfords were engaged at an early stage to assist with the design stage process, working closely with the client and their appointed architectural teams to ensure the M&E package afforded the necessary solutions in line with the new building’s purpose. As a member of this design team, Playfords were able to assist and input information regarding the M&E elements as the full design developed affording the client some comfort that each element of the new build design saw the necessary review to ensure the proposal carried the required energy efficiencies applicable.

The electrical delivery included the installation of new containment systems throughout with a new sub-main distribution cabling system from the incoming electrical supply supplying local distribution boards within the building.

Lighting was provided via a mixture of high efficiency fluorescent and LED light fittings throughout. A dedicated emergency lighting system was also installed. External lighting was provided via a mixture of building mounted LED and column mounted lighting.

The installation of a data cabling infrastructure throughout the building was included within the design for IT services and telephony. All outlets were presented as RJ45 connectivity.

A new fire detection system incorporating disabled refuge alarms to the two stair cores were installed along with a new intruder and access control systems.

Mechanical works included the Installation of LTHW heating throughout generated by gas fired, high efficiency and low NOx condensing boilers located within the plantroom. These serve via radiant panels and radiators throughout the building.

The building is generally ventilated by passive natural ventilation wherever possible to minimise energy usage. Classrooms and teaching spaces are ventilated by single sided ventilation with window openings designed to meet the requirements of BB101. Mechanical supply and extract was provided to internal rooms with no facility for natural ventilation via ceiling void mounted heat recovery ventilation units. Mechanical extract was provided to toilet areas. A dedicated supply and extract system serves the new kitchen area.

Domestic hot and cold water is provided to all sanitary fittings, sinks and appliances as required throughout the building. Hot water is generated via 2 no. LTHW-fed storage vessels located in the plantroom.

With the new building efficiencies considered across the M&E design Playfords also proposed and installed a Photovoltaic Solar Panel installation to the external roof area, affording a renewable energy power generating system to reduce the building running costs further.
